The Texas Golden Sweet Potato Festival began in 1982 by a few local farmers to celebrate the sweet potato harvest and to show the economic importance the sweet potato had on Golden and the surrounding area. The Festival started small and has grown tremendously over the years.

Folks come from all over Texas and surrounding states to join in the festivities. Looking for something to do on a beautiful October autumn day? You can take your family to the Golden Sweet Potato Festival held in Golden (Wood County), Texas -- You're guaranteed a very enjoyable experience.

At the Festival you can see Miss Texas, the Parade, Youth Livestock Show, Yam Contest (best hill of yams attached to the vine), Decorated Yam Contest (yams decorated as people and animals), Canning & Quilting Contests, Yam Pie Contest, Antique Tractor Show, Gospel Night, Arts and Crafts, Carnival, Horseshoes and lots of entertainment!

If you watched Oprah's show on Thursday (October 28, 2004) — "The Best of Everything," then you know that sweet potatoes are one of Oprah's favorite foods. The show included everything from the best chocolate, champagne, cookie, meatballs and sandwich — to delectable sweet potatoes from Golden Texas. It was a great show. If you missed it, you can read what was said about Golden Sweet Potatoes. Thank you Oprah!
